If the individual feels that he needs to take preparation classes prior to sitting for the tests, he can register for such classes and can even take them online at his own convenience. Offline preparation classes are also available in a classroom setting, and such locations will vary with the individual's location. Such test preparation will maximize an individual's chances of passing his ged tests.

The testing fees will vary with the location of the test centers, but will generally be around $70 - $80 for all five tests. Retesting for individual subjects will normally cost about $15. In order to take the ged, a tester cannot be attending high school, possess the high school diploma or be less than 16 years old. Other requirements and restrictions, such as state residency, may apply depending on the state, municipality or province.

The ged tests will cover 5 different subject areas that are covered in a high school education. These include maths, social studies, language arts in reading and in writing, and also science. In order to obtain the ged passing grade, the test taker must achieve a score no less than 450. His individual scores must be no less than 410. Test retakes must be done within 30 days of the original test, and all subjects must be taken within 36 months of first taking the ged tests. The test scores are immediately available to the testers after they finish the tests.
